Indian women and social media a study of selected socoio political economic and administrative issues in Chandigarh and Rupnagar

Abstract

Women are reckoned as an epitome of strength, love, courage and sacrifice across the globe. Social Media paves the way to mainstream the women who are not only a significant element of society, but also contribute magnificently to bring the course of change in society as well. Moreover, women have access to the education, which gives them enough knowledge about the demand of the changing environment around them. And as far as the Social Media avenues are concerned, they are neither inherently helpful nor harmful. Their effects depend upon how they are wielded. They become a real success only if women actively participate with dignity and confidence to stand for the cause and advocate for the others living in the society. This is the high time for women to harness the potential of the networking facilities to voice over the issues, advocate their opinions and act as catalytic agent of change. Women from Chandigarh have been found using the social media actively to engage in discussions; raise different social, political, economic and administrative issues; share their opinions; and depict their consciousness over the prominent concerns in comparison to the women from Rupnagar. The research reveals that women respondents from Chandigarh were highly engaged in raising the social issues, where as women from Rupnagar participated highly in the political issues. Women from Chandigarh have been more pragmatists in comparison to the women from Rupnagar. In furtherance, women from both the cities corroborated the active involvement of women is necessary for effective utilization of social media avenues to benefit the women belonging to all sections of the society. newline
