Introduction newlineOrthodontic research has always focused on the development of newlinenewer techniques which will focus on faster and more effective tooth newlinemovement. Most orthodontic patients complain of either crowding or newlineanterior proclination and this may often require extractions for correction. newlineAfter the first phase of orthodontic treatment of levelling and aligning, the newlineremaining extraction space is closed by anterior retraction or posterior newlineprotraction or combination of both depending on the anchorage newlinerequirement. Modern orthodontics employs various fixed appliance newlinesystems, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Appliance newlinebiocompatibility, orthodontic treatment efficiency and patient comfort are newlinethe major issues confronting today s orthodontists. newlineOrthodontic space closure has always been a challenge for the newlineorthodontist. Space closure using fixed appliances is usually newlineaccomplished using a variety of methods namely friction or frictionless newlinemechanics and brought by either individual canine retraction followed by newlineincisor retraction or en-masse retraction. newlineAims and Objectives newlineThe aim of this study is to compare the rate of individual canine newlineretraction with HYCON device and NiTi coil spring. newlineMaterials and Methodology newline10 of 110 newlineThe study was designed as a randomized control trial, which newlineincluded 10 patients above the age of 15 years, requiring maxillary first newlinepremolar extraction, divided into two groups, one receiving HYCON newlinedevice on the right side and NiTi coil spring on the left and the other newlinegroup receiving the HYCON device on the left and NiTi coil spring on the newlineright. The patients were recalled every 28 days and records were taken at newlineeach review. Rate of canine retraction was assessed in both the groups newlineand statistical analysis was conducted. newlineResults newlineAn independent t test revealed a significant difference in the rate of newlinecanine retraction between the two groups with greater rate of movement newlinewith NiTi coil spring.
