Abstract

iii newlineABSTRACT newlinePullulan is an extracellular polysaccharide commercially produced newlineby yeast like fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. The interest in pullulan newlineproduced from industrial wastes has substantially increased due to its newlineindustrial applications. Pullulan has wide applications in the food, newlinepharmaceutical and agriculture sectors. The major constraint in pullulan newlineproduction is expensive and low yield. This hampered the usage of pullulan in newlinea wide range of applications. newlineIn this study, attempts were made on the evaluation of media newlinecomponents for maximum pullulan production from Aureobasidium pullulans newlineMTCC 1991 using cassava waste by solid-state fermentation. A statistical newlineapproach was scrutinized to evaluate the effects of yeast extract, K2HPO4, newline(NH4)2SO4, MgSO4·7H2O and NaCl on pullulan production. The optimal newlineconditions eliciting the maximum pullulan yield (6.45 g pullulan / L of culture newlinebroth) were found to be 0.6 g/L yeast extract, 3 g/L K2HPO4, 0.2 g/L newline(NH4)2SO4, 0.3 g/L MgSO4·7H2O and 1 g/L NaCl. newline
