Dynamic Control and performance analysis of Switched Reluctance Motor using Novel Approach

Abstract

The permanent magnets are essential parts of many modern technologies. Supply of these magnets are mostly centralised in a few countries of the world that dominate the mining and processing sector of rare earth minerals. The industrial sector may get negatively impacted due to sky rocketing prices and shortage of the permanent magnets. Challenges in the supply chain and geographical factors have caused substantial global market instability for these magnets, especially neodymium and samarium. In response to the possible shortage and expensive cost of rare earth minerals to fulfil the need of high-performance industrial applications motors ranging from consumer electronics, renewable energy sectors to electric vehicles (EVs). There is a growing interest for alternate motor technologies, that do not need permanent magnet like Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs). newlineSwitched Reluctance Motor (SRM) are becoming an attractive substitute for the conventional motor technologies due to its distinct benefits. It is a rare-earth-free motor which is finding application in variable speed drive. SRM performs without winding and magnet on rotor, makes its structure light weight, durable, robust and capable of withstanding high temperature. SRM are applied in variable drive system due to high efficiency over a wider speed range. Its torque generation depends mainly on variable reluctance concept due to varying magnetic field between stator and rotor. Due to non-linear torque generation these motors suffer from high torque ripple and acoustic noise, that limits to its wide adoption. Despite its several benefits, drive requirement of SRM is complex that necessitate advanced power electronics converters and sophisticated control techniques to harness its full potential. newlineTo tailored with the unique characteristic and enhanced performance of SRM, this research contributes in the design of an improved converter with the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) in MATLAB/Simulink.
