Abstract

Any discussion relating to ureas cannot but start with a reference to the newlinehistoric experiment of Wohler in 1828. Wohler s creation of organic urea newlinefrom the inorganic ammonium isocyanate is an important landmark in newlinethe history of chemistry. Not only did it sound the death knell of vital newlineforce theory but also opened the flood gates of organic synthesis. On the newline150th anniversary of Wohler s epoch-making experiment, an interesting newlinechronological account of Wohler s discovery and the consequent stream of newlineinvestigations to understand the kinetics and mechanism of this simple newlinereaction has been presented by Shorter [1]. Since then, urea has become a newlinevital input for agriculture, all over the world, making it a multibillion dollar newlineindustry, greening the fields and quenching the hunger of man and his newlineanimals.
