Abstract
ABSTRACT: The importance of the foundation for an aboveground liquid storage tank is often overlooked or minimized. A tank s foundation, however, is one of the main factors that determine the quality and longevity of a storage tank. A soil and seismic appropriate foundation creates a more stable tank that usually has a longer service life. A poor, weak foundation will give in inch by inch to the structural and capacity load it bears as well as the natural forces of wind, water, and earthquakes. Impact from these forces can result in excessive or uneven settlement; water pockets causing corrosion on the underside of the tank; tank floor break-over, bulges, or buckling; additional stresses on the tank shell based on tank floor movement; and in extreme cases, tank failure.
newlineIt is required for water retaining structures or any other structures to design the foundation and other element to withstand against the Dead load, Imposed load, Seismic load or Wind Load.
newlineGenerally the cost of foundation is of the prime importance. Around 18-22% of the total cost is involved in substructures which is a curse to the builders and the companies who involved themselves in Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract. The profit margin can be enhanced in the tender document by knowing the accurate cost impact by the primary survey at the site. Also there is a scope for stress analysis in foundation and allied components for research point of view. The position pattern of Bracing plays an important role for the stability of Overhead Tank.
newlineIt is necessary to compare the foundation cost and stresses on the dependent variable related to soil and other parameter which directly or indirectly effect the cost.
newlineCost and Stress analysis of Overhead tank foundation with the variation in depth of soil above footing, variation in the bracing pattern, variation in the properties of soil and possible soil conditions are taken into consideration. Empirical formula are developed for cost impact. Analysis by applying one or more Diaphragm wall w
