Biomass Valorization Strategies of Aloe Vera Leaf Rind to Produce Value Added Products

Abstract

Aloe vera leaf rind (AVLR), a waste generated from aloe gel processing industries has been discarded without any commercial value or reutilization regardless of the significant amount of lignin (19.12%, w/w), hemicellulose (15.57%, w/w) and cellulose (38.39%, w/w). As of now, only limited scientific evidences are available for the valorization of this biomass into various biofuels and value-added chemicals. Most of the studies are focused on the cellulose fraction while overlooking the hemicellulose and lignin that play a crucial role in a holistic biorefinery loom. To date, the various process strategies (physico-chemical, enzymatic and anaerobic digestion) opted for the AVLR valorization are proven to be effective but possess hazardous, non-sustainable and cost-intensive nature thereby limiting the techno-economic feasibility. Thus, prerequisite an appropriate, sustainable and cost-effective conversion strategy for the complete valorization of AVLR biomass in an amicable and economical way newline
