One of the most potential fossil fuel alternatives is biodiesel, newlinewhich may be utilised in diesel engines without modification. Both newlineedible sources like palm, mustard, rapeseed, etc. as well as inedible ones newlinelike jatropha, karanjia, neem oil, etc, can be used to extract it. The food newlinesupply chain, however, may be negatively impacted by edible oil. Thus, newlineNon-edible oils are so frequently employed as a potential substitution. newlineHowever, biodiesel and its blend with diesel fuel still produce more newlineNOX emission than conventional diesel fuel due to their intrinsic oxygen newlineavailability. In order to reduce NOX emissions, higher alcohols have newlinerecently been considered as potential additives to biodiesels and their newlineblends as they possess better properties than lower alcohols. The main newlinefocus of this research is premixed combustion with higher alcohols to newlineenhance performance and concurrently reduce NOX and smoke newlineemissions from diesel engines powered by neem oil biodiesel blends. newlineA four-stroke single-cylinder diesel engine was used for this newlineresearch work and the engine loadings varied from 0% to 100% for all newlinethe conditions. Initially, diesel and the neem oil methyl ester (NOME) in newlinethe ratio by volume basis namely NB20 (20% biodiesel and 80% diesel) newlinewere used for the experiment and found that NB20 produced lesser newlineBrake Thermal Efficiency (BTE), higher oxides of nitrogen (NOX) and newlinelower carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions than newlinediesel fuel. In order to improve the performance further with NB20, this newlinevi newlineresearch work was extended with the use of two different Higher Order newlineAlcohols (HOA) namely, 1-hexanol and n-decanol, and they were used newlinein two different modes namely conventional mode (single fuel mode) newlineand premixed mode (dual fuel mode). newlineIn the first phase (single fuel mode), 1-hexanol and n-decanol newlinewere used independently as an additive with NOME to form ternary fuel newlineblends employing 10%, 20%, and 30% by volume basis. Three ternary newlinefuel blends were made by adjusting the proportion of diesel while newlinemaintaining the biodiesel
