Abstract
ABSTRACT
newlineIntroduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an alarming public health
newlineproblem. The disease is one of the main causes of chronic liver disease worldwide and
newlineis directly linked to the increased prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus
newline(T2DM) in the general population. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and
newlinetype 2 diabetes (T2DM) are common conditions that regularly co-exist and can act
newlinesynergistically to drive adverse outcomes.
newlineNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent liver condition
newlineworldwide. NAFLD has been associated with metabolic syndrome and its symptoms,
newlinesuch as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Ultrasound is widely
newlineused to grade hepatic steatosis, being the most cost-effective, non-invasive, and
newlinereadily available modality without radiation exposure.
newlineNoninvasive assessment and staging of disease are based on clinical parameters such
newlineas age, sex, liver function test, platelet count, lipid profile, BMI, and imaging
newlinemodalities such as USG, transient elastography (TE), and magnetic resonance
newlineimaging mass spectroscopy. Such clinical scoring systems and TE are useful in the
newlineearly detection of NAFLD and predicting fibrosis.
newlineThe mainstay of NAFLD management is currently to reduce modifiable metabolic
newlinerisk. Achieving good glycemic control and optimizing weight loss are pivotal to
newlinerestricting disease progression. Once cirrhosis has developed, it is necessary to screen
newlinefor complications and minimize the risk of hepatic decompensation. The principle
newlinebehind the management of NAFLD with T2DM involves an indirect effect through
newlineimprovement in IR and glycemia and thus is used for the treatment of T2DM as well.
newlineTherefore, the objectives of the present study were:
newline1. To study the prevalence of NAFLD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
newlinepatients.
newline2. To study the risk factors like age duration of diabetes mellitus type II, BMI,
newlineWHR, hypertension, liver Enzymes, fasting and post-prandial sugar levels, HbA1c
