Abstract
Background
newlineEarly diagnosis and immediate intervention play important role in the
newlinedevelopment and prognosis of children with hearing loss and decrease the
newlineimpact of the condition on the child s social, emotional, intellectual and
newlinelinguistic development. Better form of screening will give exact level of
newlinehearing loss and pathology that will help for early diagnosis and better
newlinetreatment. This study helped to know better form of neonatal screening which
newlinecan help to early diagnosis and early interventions.
newlineObjectives
newlineThe primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of Auditory
newlineBrainstem Response (ABR), Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission
newline(DPOAE) and Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR), in screening the
newlinehearing loss in Indian population. The Secondary objective was to find out
newlinewhich of the above test is more specific and sensitive in screening the hearing
newlineloss in Indian population. The other objective was to find out the association
newlinetype of delivery, low birth weight, APGAR score, Family history of hearing
newlineloss, age of the mother, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes and
newlinepreterm babies with hearing loss detected through ABR.
newlineMethodology
newlineStudy design was cross sectional criterion based validity study. 1000
newlineneonates referred from department of neonatology, Sankar Institute of Medical
newlineSciences and Research Center, Kerala. After fulfilling the inclusion criteria,
newlineNeonates undergone a regular otoscopic examination followed by a
newlinetympanometry. Then Neonates were administered all the three diagnostic
newlinescreening tests (OAE, ASSR and ABR). The sequence of the tests one after other
newlinewas allotted based on block randomization. A 2x2 contingency table cross
newlinetabulation method was used to analysis the sensitivity and specificity of tests.
newlineFrom the table True positive sensitivity, True negative specificity, false
newlinepositive, false negative were analysed. McNemar test was used,
