Study of Hazardous Industrial and Domestic Pollution in the River Godavari at Rajahmundry and its Surroundings in Andhra Pradesh

Abstract

The present study is aimed to examine the water quality of the Godavari River at Rajahmundry. Water samples from Kotillingala Revu, Kovur Godavari river bridge, Saraswati Ghat, Dowleswaram, Pushkar Ghat were collected and analysed for pH, electrical conductivity, total hardness, TDS, DO, BOD, COD, nitrates. The concentration of six heavy metals were analysed quantitatively using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Inductively Coupled Plasma- Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) is one of the most widely using technique for determination of multi-elements in various environmental matrices in single aspiration. The present study was conducted to investigate the trace metal contents (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe) of water samples, which were collected from 5 different sites along the river Godavari in Rajahmundry region by using ICP-OES technique. Also, the present study is to develop simplified WQI in order to examine the effects of anthropogenic activities on water quality of Godavari river in Rajahmundry city. Further research will helpful to minimize activities which are responsible for water contamination and for creating awareness among local people, farmers and entrepreneur, etc.
