Abstract

The present study, A Study on the Economic Aspects of Wood Handicraft Products in the Bijnor District of Uttar Pradesh , examines the socio-economic and financial significance of the Nagina wood-handicraft cluster, noted for its traditional artistry. The research analyzes artisans livelihoods, production costs, supply chains, marketing systems, and employment potential, while also identifying challenges faced by the sector. Primary data were collected from 120 artisans, traders, and entrepreneurs through structured interviews and questionnaires, supplemented with secondary sources such as government reports and research studies. newlineFindings, interpreted through human capital theory, cluster development frameworks, and the sustainable livelihoods approach, reveal that the workforce is predominantly male (89.2%) and young (67% under 30 years), with low educational attainment 37.5% with only primary schooling and 17.5% illiterate showing reliance on inherited skills. Handicrafts are the main livelihood for 61.7% of respondents, with carving (41.7%) and polishing (30%) as key specializations. Nearly 70% earn and#8377;15,000 and#8377;21,000 per month, reflecting informal sector patterns. Cost analysis of 30 products indicates an average production cost of and#8377;630.63, with raw materials accounting for 40.5%, and a 30% markup yielding an average selling price of and#8377;895.50. Markets are diversifying, with local fairs (32.1%) still important, while exports (39.3%) and e-commerce (10.7%) are expanding. Sectoral growth is evident, with units increasing from 510 in 2009 10 to 1,050 in 2023 24, and female participation rising from 14.3% to 32%. Despite progress, issues such as raw material shortages, financial constraints, and market barriers persist.
