Abstract

The Present research work focuses on the unexplored elements of science in the Ancient Indian and the Mayan civilisation from 2000 B.C. to 600 A.D. It highlights the similarities and differences between the scientific knowledge of the two. The Study also explores the development of the scientific temperament of the ancient people. It also tries to demarcated a distinct boundary between Science and Myth in the ancient world. newlineThe proposed study compares the ancient knowledge of science present in both the Indian and the Mayan civilisation under the various dimensions of modern science. It highlights the similarities between two civilisations which never came into contact, and delves into a deeper analysis of the knowledge of these civilisations. newlineThe ancient Indians and the Mayan were great time-keepers and observers. The ancient civilisations did not have the modern technology of telescope, microscope, and labs for experiments. They recorded what they saw from their naked eye. They developed their own number system and had a concept of Zero. They also developed theories trying to explain the happenings around them, such as theories of motion, matter, creation of the universe, etc They calculated the path and motion of different celestial objects and maintained a calendar. They also classified nature, elements, animals, plants, etc. and studied their influences human body in detail. newlineThe present research concludes that both of these civilisations did not influence each other in the development of their scientific knowledge. However, they were very similar. It also sets a clear boundary between science and myth, in an attempt to de-mystify ancient Indian sciences by comparing them to the sciences of the ancient Maya. The research tries to bring to the forefront the history of the scientific temperament of the people which is generally overshadowed by the political, economic, social and cultural history.
