Abstract
Engineering materials in general is isotropic having the same
newlineproperties such as strength and modulus in any direction Grain boundary may
newlinebe present in some metals due to their manufacturing methods adopted but it
newlineis only in critical applications that this needs consideration Composites
newlinehowever are anisotropic and will have very different properties in different
newlinedirections since the matrix material is isotropic whereas the reinforcement is
newlinenot The properties of the composite will reflect the properties of the
newlinereinforcement so that it can have greatly different properties in different
newlinedirections This is exploited in design as component and structures are rarely
newlinerequiring equal strength and stiffness in all directions The composites can
newlineachieve this by particular arrangements of the reinforcement
newlinePolymer matrix composites can be used for metal replacement but
newlinethere are key property differences which mean that directed substitution
newlineshould be subject to material selection of a materials expert
