Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a frequent chronic disease with high
newlinemorbidity and mortality. 1 Diabetes is a major public health concerns
newlineworldwide, especially type 2 DM. 2 The world health organization
newline(WHO) estimated the increase in type 2 DM approximately 46%,
newlinefrom 55 million in 2000 to 83 million in 2030 in developed nation;
newlinewhereas, developing nation may increase approximately from 30
newlinemillion in 2000 to 80 million in 20 30, accounting for 150%
newlineincrease. 2
newlineIndia being top in the chart with estimated tendency to
newlineincrease from 31.7 million in 2000 to 79.4 million out of 366
newlinemillion worldwide by 2030, making India in the process of making
newlinediabetic capital of the world. 1 ,2 One of the common complications
newlineof diabetic mellitus on eye is diabetic retinopathy. Its manifestation
newlineis linked to the duration of diabetes, as proved by Wisconsin
newlineepidemiological study. Several studies have reported an incre ase in the levels of
newlineinflammatory cytokines such as c -reactive protein (CRP),
newlineinterleukin (IL)-1, IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-a in
newlinepatients with diabetes. 8 ,9 Inflammatory cytokines are produced by
newlinedifferent cell types, released into circulation a nd have local, central
newlineand peripheral effects on different tissue types. 1 0 Two of the main
newlineconditions of prediabetes are impaired levels of fasting glucose
newline(IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). IFG is defined as the
newlinefasting plasma glucose level ranging from 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L)
newlineto 125 mg/dL (6.9 mmol/L). IGT is a condition characterized by a 2 -
newlineh plasma glucose value in the oral glucose tolerance test, ranging
newlinefrom 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) to 199 mg/dL (11.0 mmol/L). Another
newlineprediabetic condition is gl ycated haemo-globin (HbA1C) that ranges
newlinefrom 5.7% to 6.4%. 1 1 Macrovascular complications are twice as
newlinecommon in people with IGT as in normoglycemic individuals.
newlineThis study investigated and compared the NLR, PLR, MLR
newlineand certain biochemical levels of participants with normal glucose
newlinetolerance (NGT), IGT, newly diagnosed diabetes
