Evaluation of the role of biofilm producing pathogens from clinical specimens in patients with chronic otitis media

Abstract

Introduction: newlineEven when appropriate antibiotics are used to treat a COM infection, the illness may return. Based on these findings, we postulate that biofilm-forming bacteria in the chronically infected middle ear may be resistant to antibiotics and other forms of host defence. newlineAim and Objectives: newlineThe objective of this study is to characterize pathogens and their biofilm-forming capabilities in individuals with chronic otitis media. Additionally, the study aims to analyze the development of biofilms and assess antibiotic resistance in these cases. pattern of the obtained clinical isolates and to use various culture techniques to classify the bacteria up to the species level. newlineMaterial and methods: newlineThe study involved the participation of 70 patients from the department of otorhinolaryngology at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute. Collection of middle ear discharge was conducted with meticulous aseptic precautions, employing sterile swabs inserted into screw-cap tubes. Additionally, in cases of dry ear observed during middle ear surgery, samples were obtained from the edges of the perforated tympanic membrane and placed in a saline container. All clinical specimens were promptly transported to the laboratory within a 2-hour window from the time of collection for subsequent culture analysis. newlineResult: newlineAbout 17% of biofilm producing organism is staphylococcus, 17% of biofilm producing organism is streptococcus. About 7% of biofilm producing organism is Klebseilla.About7% of biofilm producing organism is proteus. About 6% of biofilm producing organism is E.coli. About7% of biofilm producing organism is Pseudomonas. About 17% had cefotaxime sensitivity, 11% had ceftriaxone sensitivity, 11 % had ciprofloxacin sensitivity. About 7% had metronidazole sensitivity. About 3% newlinehad Amikacin sensitivity. About 6% had imipenem sensitivity. About 1% had meropenem sensitivity. newlineConclusion: newlineThis study adds to the information on the common pathogens-forming biofilms in otitis media.
