dc.description.abstractThe global burden of neonatal death is estimated to be 4.8 million, of which 3.2 million deaths occur during the first week of life. Out of them as many as 1.24 million neonates die every year in India, amounting to a quarter of the total burden.1 Neonatal mortality is indeed the most significant child health challenge facing the nation. newlineSepsis is the most common cause of neonatal mortality. Sepsis is defined as a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) caused by infection. The connection between infection and sepsis has been documented for many years. Neonatal sepsis is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. In India it contributes to 19% of all neonatal deaths. Sepsis can lead to multiorgan failure and is globally a prime cause of death by infection. newlineThe diagnosis of severe bacterial infection in neonates is often difficult because the clinical signs are non specific and subtle. Moreover, the laboratory tests routinely used at present are also inadequate. newlineCurrently no single test is considered to be as an ideal diagnostic test so, new laboratory markers for definitive diagnosis of neonatal sepsis are needed. Therefore, we have undertaken this study for diagnosis of sepsis in neonates with the help of upcoming biochemical parameters such as Presepsin, Procalcitonin, NGAL as well as oxidative stress. newlineTotal number of subjects included in this study was 140, out of which 70 were clinically suspected sepsis cases and 70 were healthy controls. newlineIn the present study, the concentration of MDA in study group is 9.8 ± 1.07 nmol/L (Mean and SD) while 7.8 ± 0.57 nm/L (Mean and SD) in control group which is statistically highly significant. (p value= 0.000). Activity of SOD in control group is 2.5 ± 0.40 U/ml (Mean and SD) and found reduced in study group 2.4 ± 038 U/ml which is statistically significant. (p value lt 0.028).
