Y OF CATALYTIC PROPERTY OF IODINE FOR FORMATION OF CARBON-CARBON BOND The thesis entitled quotSTUDY OF CATALYTIC PROPERTY OF IODINE FOR FORMATION OF CARBON-CARBON BONDquot is divided into five chapters as follows 1. Introduction 2. Synthesis of B-amino carbonyl compounds using iodine as catalyst 3. Scalable synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones in presence of iodine 4. Iodine catalyzed one-pot three-component synthesis of homoallyl benzyl ethers 5. Synthesis of highly functionalized amine compounds using iodine as catalyst CHAPTER I Introduction In Chapter I, a general introduction of the thesis is given which describes briefly about the properties of iodine and its use as a catalyst for organic transformations. Because of the Lewis acidic property of iodine, it can catalyze various organic reactions such as oxidation, reduction, protection, deprotection, aromatization, cyclization, formation of heterocycles and many others. A short summery of different transformations catalyzed by iodine has been added with references. CHAPTER II Synthesis of B-amino carbonyl compounds using iodine as catalyst This chapter deals with the synthesis of B-amino carbonyl compounds which are versatile synthetic building blocks for preparation of many nitrogen containing biologically active molecules. Mannich reaction is an important and useful method providing the synthesis of B-amino carbonyl compounds. This chapter is divided into two sections: SECTION A and SECTION B SECTION A deals with the synthesis of B-amino esters by a three component Mannich-type reaction of aldehydes, benzyl carbanate and silylketene acetal in presence of catalytic amount of iodine (scheme 1)1 The reaction was carried out by taking aldehyde, benzyl carbamate and silyl ketene acetal in the ratio 1: 1.05: 1.2 using 10 mol% iodine in acetonitnle at room temperature. SECTION B discusses synthesis of various B-amino ketones by direct three component reaction of aldehydes, benzyl carbamate and ketones using iodine as catalyst (scheme 2)2. Scheme 2 The reaction was...
