In the present work, traditional Indian medicinal plant Ipomoea aquatica were selected on the basis of strong literature evidence supporting the pharmacognostical, phytochemical and pharmacological activity of this medicinal plant and investigated for the treatment of Alzheimer s disease. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of four different extract of fpomoea aquatic revealed the presence of valuable and essential phytoconstituents like alkaloid, flavonoid, terpenoid, glycosides, saponin, sterols, tanins and proteins. Quantitative estimation of total phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and vitamin C clearly shows the HAEIJA has the highest content of these vital constituents when compare to other extracts. In vitro acetyl cholinesterase inhibition assay carried out in for the first time in Ipomoea aquatica. All four extracts CEIA, HEIA, EEIA and HAEIA subjected to in vitro AChE inhibition assay in order to predict the presence of most important bioactive component responsible for inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. From the results of the above mentioned studies it might be concluded that bioactive component like quercetin (flavonoid), chlorogenic acid (Phenolic acid), sitosterol present in the hydro alcoholic extract of Ipomoea aquatica may have synergistic action and was responsible for the following mechanism of actions in AD. 1. Inhibiting the enzyme Acetylcholinesterase and Monoamine oxidase -A and B there by improves the neurotransmitters essential for memory and learning. 2. Effectively scavenges the free radicals by improving the level of antioxidant enzymes. 3. Blocks the DNA damage induced by lipid peroxidation. 4. Decrease the level of cytokine like TNFa. and IL 6. 5. Blocks the amyloid induced apoptosis by promoting the expression of antiapoptotic protein like Bel-2. From the overall observation of the present study it was concluded that the plant Ipomoea aquatica halt the progression and may be used for the effective treatment and clinical management of Alzheimer s disease. newline newline
