Phytochemical And Hypoglycemic Evaluation Of Selected Indian Medicinal Plants

Abstract

This study investigates the antidiabetic potential of Artemisia indica, a traditional medicinal plant. A hydroalcoholic extract of Artemisia indica leaves, rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, and terpenoids, was prepared and found to be safe in acute toxicity studies. Using streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats, the extract demonstrated significant antidiabetic effects. There was a substantial reduction in fasting blood glucose levels, improved oral glucose tolerance, and elevated serum insulin levels in treated groups compared to diabetic controls. Histopathological examination revealed the preservation of pancreatic islet structure, supported by increased insulin expression in beta cells. Additionally, the extract exhibited notable antioxidant activity, reducing oxidative stress markers. This study suggests that Artemisia indica may offer a therapeutic approach to diabetes through its antihyperglycemic and antioxidant properties. Further investigations into the molecular mechanisms and clinical applications of Artemisia indica are warranted for its potential as a natural antidiabetic agent. newline
