Abstract

Over many parts of the globe the advanced nations were very quick to understand the necessity of preserving good health and accordingly they gave their extra effort to avail many facilities to do physical activities. Majority of the citizens of those progressive nations indulge themselves in maintaining their bodies through various types of actions like gymming, sports etc. Moreover, now-a-days, sports has gained a different level altogether and come out from the limited scope of body-exercise and become a competitive event to exhibit group or individual competency and valor. newlineThe event of the Olympics can well be compared with an event like a war. In fact, it is no less than a war in many aspects. Like in a war, people fight here in sports to win the medals in spite of everything. But the difference is, in a war people fight to win in a destructive way, but in sports the fight is destruction-free. The warriors hone their skills and prepare themselves for the battle . But as everything has positive and negative sides, in this field also sometimes unwanted activities have been spotted like consumption of prohibited drugs to accelerate the physical prowess, thus losing grace (Mukherji, 1984). newlineIndia also has a remarkable record in the Olympics. If we look back at the post-Independence record of individual Olympic medals after Independence, in 1952 in Helsinki K Yadav grabbed it wrestling. After that in 1996 Leander Paes became a tennis ace. Then we have Karrnam Malleswari who won it in 2000 in Sydney for her extraordinary performance in weightlifting. Some names like Dipa Karmakar who qualified for the Olympics, but unfortunately could not win a medal, left a lasting impression in the sports world. newline
