Abstract
The recent advancements in internet applications increase the
newlinebandwidth requirements and unthreaded connectivity to end users. Wireless and
newlinewired networks are required by the telecommunication industry to satisfy user
newlinedemands. Fiber Wireless access network (FiWi) utilizes the best features of both
newlinePassive Optical Networks (PON) and Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN), which
newlineprovides uninterrupted services to subscribers at any time and everywhere
newlinemanner. The network survivability against fiber failure is a key issue in the
newlinedesign of a FiWi access network. All link failures are not similar. The network
newlinefailure probability is influenced by the place where it occurs (nodes, fibers,
newlineOptical Network Unit (ONU), Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The network
newlinereliability can be achieved through optimum placement of backup fiber and
newlinebackup ONU deployment with efficient rerouting and dynamic bandwidth
newlineallocation procedures. The segment failures caused by feeder fiber cuts affect
newlinehuge data traffic in both up/down stream resulting poor QoS performance.
newlineThe traffic rerouting in FiWi gained more attention due to bandwidth disparities
newlinein frontend WMN and backend PON. In such scenario Backup ONU plays a
newlinemajor role in efficient rerouting and traffic recovery. During single segment
newlinefailure, backup ONU takes in-charge of failed segment and the interrupted traffic
newlineis carried over through backup fibers to all neighboring segment and it requires a
newlinererouting procedure aware of delay, capacity, shortest path, flow and multipath
newlinecapabilities. A new Automated Fault Detection and ReRouting algorithm
newline(AFDRR) is proposed that identifies fault occurrences and reroutes data traffic to
newlinenearby ONUs based on their residual capacities. A single segment failure
newlinescenario is designed using FiWi with a single OLT network known as Wireless
newlineOptical Broadband Access Networks (WOBAN). Its performance is analyzed in
newlineWi-Fi, WiMax, and UMTS environments by injecting wireless node failures,
newlinedistribution fiber and feeder fiber cuts, ONUs and an
