Abstract
In the prediction part of the scientific method we exercise our models to tell us what
newlinewill happen in a yet-to-be-conducted experiment or in an anticipated set of events in the real
newlineworld. These predictions are then followed by observations that serve either to validate the
newlinemodel or to suggest reasons that the model is inadequate. We can also improve our gathering
newlineof empirical data when we used model to obtain guidance about where to look.
newlineA mathematical model is a description of a system using mathematical concepts and
newlinelanguage. The process of developing a mathematical model is termed mathematical
newlinemodeling. The mathematical model is a representation of a real system. The essence of a
newlinegood mathematical model is that it is simple in design and exhibits the basic properties of the
newlinereal system that we are attempting to understand. The model should be testable against
newlineempirical data. The comparisons of the model to the real system should ideally lead to
newlineimproved mathematical models. The model may suggest improved experiments to highlight a
newlineparticular aspect of the problem, which in turn may improve the collection of data. Thus,
newlinemodeling itself is an evolutionary process, which continues toward learning more about
newlinecertain processes rather than finding an absolute reality.
newlineMathematical models are used in the natural sciences (such as physics, biology, earth
newlinescience, meteorology) and engineering disciplines (such as computer science, artificial
newlineintelligence), as well as in the social sciences (such as economics, psychology, sociology,
newlinepolitical science). Physicists, engineers, statisticians, operations research analysts, and
newlineeconomists use mathematical models most extensively [citation needed]. A model may help
newlineto explain a system and to study the effects of different components, and to make predictions
newlineabout behaviour.
