Abstract
With alarming increase in population, and development in technology, today s energy sector is not only expected to satisfy the energy demand but also to maintain higher power quality, dealing along with, the rising concern about problems related to our environment, such as global warming. This poses new challenges to the power grid and it is expected to perform better and be and#8213;Greenerand#8214;. The earliest power systems were small with only conventional power plants in operation, whose output can easily be controlled and harmonic penetration into the grid was also less. But the above mentioned aspects resulted in the development of large centralized grids connecting up entire regions and different types of generating systems. The development of distributed generation and injecting power to the grid by isolated DC generation systems caused increased penetration in the system which has led to instances of instability in the grid
newlineIndia is an economically developing country with a high demand for energy but it is also blessed with an abundance of sustainable and environmental friendly renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, biomass, hydro, and geothermal. Wind power is a fast growing source of renewable energy due to its numerous advantages. Cumulative installation of wind has grown at a faster pace over the last two decades; especially grid connected wind capacity shows fastest rate of growth compared with other forms of renewable power generation, and has achieved 20 30 % global annual growth rate.
