An Exploratory Analysis of Factors Affecting Performance of Additional Auxiliary Nurses and Midwives in Andhra Pradesh

Abstract

An exploratory analysis of factors affecting performance of additional auxiliary nurses and mid-wives (ANMs) in Andhra Pradesh Human resources are crucial assets in the public health care system. Emphasis on the performance of public health personnel is an essential component to improve the efficiency of public health care delivery of the country. The objectives of study are to analyse the roles and responsibilities of the 2nd ANMs, determine factors which positively and negatively affect the ability of 2nd ANMs to perform their assigned role and responsibilities and propose strategies that could improve performance of 2nd ANMs. The study adopted a quantitative research approach through primary data collection with structured interview schedules in direct interviews. A descriptive and exploratory research design was employed for the study. The data analysis was carried out to identify and compare existence or absence of factors with the aid of the SPSS software package for statistical analysis. A multi-stage stratified random sampling method was adopted. In the first stage, undivided Andhra Pradesh is stratified into three geographical regions, namely Telangana, Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. Medak, East Godavari and Anantapur districts were randomly selected from the three respective regions in the second stage. About 10,381 2 nd ANMs were working in undivided AP during the time of data collection. In the third stage, 40% of working 2 nd ANMs in each selected district was randomly selected based on the Cochlear s formula. The sample covered a total of 662 respondents representing three districts and 60 mandals. A functional framework has been prepared to guide the ANMs in sound, smooth and systematic discharge of their routine roles, duties and responsibilities. A performance management framework and strategic action plan have also been prepared on the basis of results and is proposed to focus on role and responsibilities to enhance the ANM profession, strengthen the knowledge and expertise of 2nd ANMs, improve their performance and generate knowledge through research newline
