Comparative Study of Adiponectin Leptin and Oxidative Stress in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in Kanpur Region Population

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine abnormalities, characterized by biochemical hyperandrogenaemia, chronic anovulation, and polycystic ovaries. There are very few established biomarkers for the diagnosis of the PCOS and clear need to determine the role of additional biomarker for the diagnosis and the understanding the mechanism of PCOS. AIM: Comparative study of Adiponectin, leptin and oxidative stress in polycystic ovary syndrome in Kanpur region population in obese and non obese women. OBJECTIVES: To determine the association of serum levels of adiponectin with PCOS, b. To determine the association of serum levels of leptin with PCOS, c. To determine the association of oxidative Stress with PCOS MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry with the collaboration of the Department of Gynaecology Rama Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre Kanpur .U.P. The study was approved by the Ethical Committee of the institution and Professors and Head of the Department of Gynaecology. Written informed consents in the vernacular language were obtained from all the participants, upon fulfilling the inclusion criteria. 100 patients with PCOS and 100 controls were recruited after fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. 5 ml of blood samples were collected for the MDA, SOD, Leptin and Adiponectin assay and other available lab tests were recorded in the case record form after taking the consent. The differences in the categorical variables were analyzed using a chi-square test. Differences in the continuous variables were analyzed using student t-test if the distribution was normal. Central Limit Theorem was considered for meeting the statistical assumptions. Logistic regression analysis was done to assess predictors for PCOS.
