Abstract

Magnesium alloys plays a predominant role in the field of automobile, newlineaerospace and commercial sectors because of their excellent strength to newlineweight ratio, good machinability and good stiffness. However the corrosion newlineresistance of the alloy is considerably low. Hence, magnesium alloys are newlinereinforced with ceramic particles like TiC, Al2O3, B4C, WC, etc,. to produce newlinemagnesium matrix composite materials. This is done to enhance or tailor the newlinerequired property of the magnesium alloys. Very limited work has been newlinecarried out for the synthesis of AZ61 magnesium alloy reinforced with nano newlineB4C particles composite material. Utilization of composite materials in all newlineengineering sectors has been increasing rapidly which creates demand for the newlineproduction of composite materials with superior properties such as extreme newlinehardness, low density, corrosion resistance, etc, compared to alloys. newlineThis research aims to develop a novel magnesium-based newlinenanocomposite reinforced with B4C nanoparticles to tailor the properties of newlinemagnesium alloy. Aluminium and zinc-based magnesium alloy AZ61 was newlineselected as matrix material and nano B4C nanoparticles were selected as newlinereinforcement particles. The composites were fabricated through stir casting newlineprocess by varying the weight percentage of B4C nanoparticles viz. pure newlineAZ61, AZ61/2.5wt.%B4C, AZ61/5wt.%B4C, AZ61/7.5wt.%B4C and newlineAZ61/10wt.%B4C. Characterization studies have been carried out on the newlinesynthesized composites to investigate the dispersion and presence of elements newlinein composites using Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive newlineAnalysis. Initially AZ61 alloy was melted in graphite crucible at the newlinetemperature of 780°C and the vortex was produced by stirring the pool with a newlinemotorized agitator at 620 rpm. newline
