Abstract

India has a great diversity of environmental regimes. India qualifies as newlineone of the top twelve countries in the world in terms of biodiversity because newlineof its tropical and subtropical climate, its great variety of environmental newlineregimes, and its position at the junction of the African, Palaearctic, and newlineOriental regions. It is also a part of a secondary, diffuse center of newlinedomestication of plants and animals. Conserving the Indian heritage of newlinebiodiversity is a major challenge, especially given the large human newlinepopulation with its subsistence needs and the growing resource demands on newlinethe urban industrial sector. newline
