Abstract
The protection of generator is very complex and challenging
newlinebecause of the auxiliary equipments that are connected to the generator.
newlineIn case of fault on the generator it is not enough to trip the main breaker and
newlineisolate the generator as there are auxiliary equipments that are connected to
newlinethe generator. A fault/abnormal condition that occur on auxiliary equipment
newlinemay lead to generator failure. Each and every auxiliary equipments connected
newlineto the generator makes the protection of generator challenging. Loss of
newlineexcitation is a frequent fault that accounts for 70% of all generator failure.
newlineIt is necessary to detect loss of excitation as soon as possible.
newlineNowadays Flexible AC Transmission System devices are
newlineextensively used for its various benefits like increase in power flow capability
newlineand voltage control. The presence of FACTS devices like Static Synchronous
newlineCompensator (STATCOM) in transmission line affects the measured voltage,
newlinecurrent and impedance by the protective relays in the system. The STATCOM
newlineconnected in mid-point of transmission line affects the reach/operating time of
newlineloss of excitation protection relay.
newlineIn this context the simulation studies and hardware in-loop
newlinesimulation using real time digital simulator (RT Lab), power amplifier and
newlinenumerical relay (MiCom-P343) is performed to analyse the real time impact
newlineof STATCOM on traditional loss of excitation protection relay. The analysis
newlineis performed for total loss of excitation condition and partial loss of excitation
newlinecondition. The results of investigations shows that the transient response of
newlinethe STATCOM during loss of excitation condition affects the reach/operating
newlinetime of loss of excitation relay.
