Abstract

Hydrogen has often been projected as a promising fuel due to its clean burning newlinenature. It offers several advantages such as high energy content per unit mass, high newlineburning velocity, wide flammability limits etc. If hydrogen is generated from water by newlineelectrolysis, it can potentially be a renewable fuel. Electrolysis of water yields a mixture newlineof H2 and O2 in stoichiometric proportions, commonly referred to as HHO gas. HHO newlinegas thus produced through electrolysis of water can be used as an alternative fuel in newlineSI and CI engines. The use of HHO gas in engine is limited to its production rate. newlineIn this research, an electrolyser was designed and manufactured using titanium metal newlineas electrodes. The performance of electrolyser was conducted at different operating newlineconditions. The effect of production rate of HHO gas on current supplied, effect newlineof concentration of electrolyte solution on voltage, effect of generation rate on time newlineand relation between current and voltage were reported. A theoretical calculation has newlinebeen carried out to validate the experimental investigation. Further these calculations newlineextended to analysis the requirement of number of cells and amount of current required newlineto produce the required amount of HHO gas for engine application was done and newlinereported. newlineIntroducing HHO gas into the engine is limited by the production rate of the newlineelectrolyser system which depends on applied current and number of cells. An newlineexperimental investigation was conducted in order to understand the behaviour of Diesel newline- Hydrogen and Diesel - HHO gas in a dual fuel CI engine with high flow rate of gases. newlineIn this study simulated HHO gas was introduced in the inlet manifold of CI engine newlinewhere the composition of HHO gas was in the ratio of 2:1 similar to stoichiometric newlineproportion of gas produced through electrolysis of water. The mixture was prepared newlineusing stored hydrogen and oxygen where the composition was maintained using the newlinecylinder regulators. Experiments were conducted at 6 different flow rates of HHO gas newlineand 5 different torque con
