The organic salts in which cations or anions or both carries chirality in their structures and generally melt below 100oC are called chiral ionic liquids -CILs-. Like other ionic liquids, the physical and chemical properties are regulated by the ions involved in the CILs. CILs shares similar properties as other ILs except for the enantioseparation. They can be synthesized either from the prochiral substrates or from the commercially available enantiopure compounds. Four different methods are generally used for their synthesis: Quaternization, anion-metathesis, acid-base neutralization and combination of halide salt with transition-metal halides. CILs have marked their identity specifically in the separation of the enantiomers of various important compounds especially bio- products through spectroscopic, chromatographic and electroanalytical techniques. There is myriad of review and research papers in the literature concerned with the syntheses and applications of CILs. This dissertation includes the synthesis of CILs from natural chiral pool and their studies in different applications like chiral recognition by NMR and Fluorescence techniques and as organocatalyst in enantioselective reduction of the prochiral ketones. The CILs performedexcellently on both grounds. The CILs were characterized through advance techniques like NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA etc. The chiral ionic compounds were assembled through quaternization process and highly stable at given conditions. newline
