The construction industry plays a key role in India (due to its labour advantage), generating jobs, contributing to social and political stability, and adding high value of employment. As India becomes more and more active in its pursuit of global economic integration, the entry of many foreign giants into its own domestic market will surely intensify the competition. Recognizing the importance of individual competencies frame work for workmen in construction industry, training need and their performance will help the companies improve its competitiveness. In addition, many researchers had emphasized the importance of an integrative perspective study. Therefore, this study integrates competencies, training needs and workmen performance to investigate the frame work in construction industry in India. There is indeed a rapid decline in the recruitment and retention of intelligent, young and exuberant people that the industry so badly needs to flourish into a good and beneficial business entity. The need for enhancing these practices is laudable and indeed acceptable. However the question of whether this is the case within the Indian setting and if so, how this can be accomplished remains unanswered. It is in this vain and the quest to answer the research questions asked in the study being undertaken. It aims at providing a tool for enhancing HRM in large construction companies operating in India. Using 110 responses from 10 different organizations, the study explores and explains Individual competencies for workmen in construction industry with reference to 20 different trade, their training needs and difference in performance of trained and untrained. All of these competencies had reliability (all above 0.84), indicating internal consistency. Although these dimensions retain a certain degree of similarity with others found in previous studies elsewhere, this collection of dimensions offers typical features of construction companies in India. newlineen_US
