dc.description.abstractBackground and Objective: newlineDiabetes mellitus in an endocrine disorder associated with cognitive dysfunction and literature revealed that diabetes causes detrimental effect on a range of cognitive functions which is reported in battery of papers. Exercise has been considered a cornerstone of diabetes management, along with diet and medication but its effect on neurocognitive behavior is still not clear. Therefore, the present study was designed to evaluate the effect of structured exercise therapy on cognitive and neurophysiological functions among newly diagnosed young adults of age 20-45 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus. newlineMethodology: newlineThe present study was conducted in the Research Laboratory, Department of Physiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, KLE University, Belagavi. Study participants were recruited from KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital and MRC, Belagavi. The study included a sample of 148 diabetic patients and 74 normal healthy controls. The diabetics were divided into 2 groups as Diabetic controls and Intervention group by randomization. The baseline data of all the groups were obtained and then interventional group was administered with structured exercise therapy consisting of aerobic and resistance exercises and assessed at the end of 2nd, 4th and 6th month. The subjects in diabetic control group were also assessed at the end of six months. newlineCognitive functions were assessed by PGI Battery of Brain Dysfunctions, Stroop and Psychomotor Function Test. Neuro-physiological functions were assessed by measuring nerve conduction velocity and audio visual reaction time. Cardio-respiratory parameters were measured by physical fitness index and V02 max. Biochemical parameters like Glucose, Lipid profile and Hb% were estimated by standard methods.
