The Kachchh region, Gujarat, is situated in the northwestern part of India which is newlineone of the most active intraplate seismic zones in the world away from active plate newlineboundaries such as Makran and Himalaya (Rastogi et al, 2014). Two catastrophic newlineintraplate earthquakes have occurred in the Kachchh region, within a time span of 182 newlineyears. One of them was the great Allah Bund earthquake of 1819 (Mw=7.8), which newlineoccurred about 100 km NW of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake epicentre (Rajendran and newlineRajendran, 2001). On 26th January 2001, the deadliest intraplate earthquake ever to newlinestrike India occurred on a south-dipping reverse fault in the Kachchh region which newlinefalls in Zone V on the seismic zoning map of India (BIS, 2002). Surat city falling in newlinethe less active and aseismic region of southern mainland of Gujarat region at a newlinedistance of about 350 km south of Kachchh Rift Basin was affected due to the past newlineand recent earthquakes in the Gujarat region, intensity varies from III to VIII on the newlineModified Mercalli scale (GSI 2000, 2003; MacMurdo 1823; Oldham 1883; Sinvhal newline2010).quot newline newline
