Abstract
Different soil improvement techniques, such as chemical grouting, stone columns, the mixing
newlineof natural and synthetic materials, etc. are being used all over the world to satisfy the
newlineengineering requirements for the construction of any civil engineering structures like highway
newlinepavement, runways, building foundations, bridges, etc. Nevertheless, the majority of these
newlinemethods rely on artificial or mechanical components, which need a lot of energy to produce or
newlineinstall. Therefore, looking for innovative, cost-effective, environment-friendly, and overall
newlinemore sustainable soil improvement techniques becomes necessary. The most recent and
newlineenvironmentally friendly soil improvement technique now considered in geotechnical
newlineengineering is bio-cementation. The bio-cementation is a recent technique for improving soil
newlineproperties in which bacteria is used to create calcium carbonate crystals which acts as particle
newlinebinding or pore-filling materials between soil particles.
newlineThe main objective of the present study is to examine the effect of the bio-cementation
newlineprocess on the physical and geotechnical properties of locally available silty sand with and
newlinewithout the addition of the rice husk ash (RHA) additive. The soil used in the current study was
newlinecollected from Lekhi village along National Highway 415, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Bacillus
newlineSp Bacteria obtained from the Microbial Type Culture Collection and Gene Bank in
newlineChandigarh, India, was used for the preparation of bio-cemented soil samples. These samples
newlinewere prepared with 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 optimal density (OD) concentrations of bacterial solution
newlineand 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 Molarity (M) cementation solution at their optimum moisture content and
newlinemaximum dry density values. The RHA additive was added at 5%, 10%, and 15% for
newlinepreparating control+RHA and bio-cemented+RHA samples. In the present study, curing period
newlineof 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days were considered. Different laboratory tests were conducted on the
newlinesoil samples, namely compaction test.
