| dc.description.abstract | The dynamics of comics are rooted in its unique ability to merge fragmentation with cohesion, newlineoffering an unconventional narrative form that challenges traditional storytelling. Despite the newlinepervasive tendency to dismiss comics as mere entertainment, this medium possesses a profound newlineseriousness and a striking sense of hybridity that scholars and aficionados have increasingly newlineacknowledged over the past four decades. The critical engagement with comics has critically newlineshifted it from the cultural periphery toward a space closer to the centre of academic and artistic newlinediscourse, (if not fully central yet). The history and evolution of comics reflect a rich interplay newlinebetween artistic innovation, cultural expression, and societal change. Comics, as a distinct newlinemedium, traces its roots to early visual storytelling traditions like the sequential art found in newlineEgyptian murals and the Bayeux Tapestry. However, the modern form of comics began to newlinecoalesce in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly with the advent of satirical newlinecartoons in European newspapers and serialised comic strips in the United States. The newlinepublication of The Yellow Kid in 1895 is often cited as a seminal moment in the development of newlinemodern comics, merging visual art with narrative humour. newlineComics can be regarded as one of the most experimental and hybrid mediums of storytelling, newlineseamlessly blending images and words to produce unique narratives. This intrinsic hybridity has newlinenot only made this medium a compelling art form but also fostered critical discourses and newlineconnotations spanning multiple disciplines. A significant milestone in the evolution of comics newlinewas marked in June 1938 with the introduction of Superman in Action Comics #1. Superman s newlinedebut gave a cultural shift, captivating the American imagination, particularly that of children, newlineand establishing the superhero as a figure of enduring popular appeal. By the 1950s, Superman s newlinesales exceeded one million copies, reflecting the cultural and commercial dominance of comic newlinebooks during that era. | |
