It is initiated at Birth and lingers on throughout life, and a process of nurturing the capacities and potentials of individual to be successful in all spheres of life. It brings changes in the personalities of the learner. It has its meaning differently to different people; and is defined in the light of the need of an individual. Education is an enduring process that helps in the complete growth of an individual. It acts as a driving force for the entire development of an individual. The educational system has well established goals to achieve; such as social efficiency, sense of community, good citizenship and desired personality. In our country, various commissions, committees, and policies were constituted to improve the standard of the educational system at all stages in order to enhance the student achievement. The cut throat nature of the present education system has greatly influenced the pattern of learning in our country. There is nothing more frightening for secondary school students than the annual board examination. The changing education system is text book oriented and encourage rote memorization that need long hours of study. Up to primary level, rote memorization could be bearable and manageable. As students enter into higher classes, academic load becomes more demanding and challenging. Students could not stand under the new situation and develop understanding deficit. High academic achievement has become a measuring criterion of student s capabilities and this set aside all other crucial aspect of academics. High academic achievement has acquired greater importance than the real and active learning. Academic success in form of academic achievement has replaced academic excellence.
