Abstract

Dermatophytes are a group of filamentous fungi known as ringworm fungi. They are keratinolytic and invade keratinized tissues, causing mostly superficial infections in the skin, hair, and nails. They are among the most common causes of skin disease in the world. These infections are usually not fatal, also occur in immunocompetent hosts, and in many cases, are long-lasting, recurrent, and difficult to treat. These infections are both endemic and epidemic, spreading easily and rapidly, especially among lower socioeconomic classes, and therefore require quick and safe therapy.
