Abstract
Adsorption process using low cost materials for the elimination and recovery of
newlinetoxic metals/elements/ions from the aqueous stream are eco friendly, cost effective, easy to
newlineoperate and toxic elements even at low concentration can also be removed. The main
newlineobjective of the present study is to eliminate Cr(VI) and F- from the aqueous stream by
newlineadsorption technique using some low cost materials as adsorbents. Out of different toxic
newlinemetals/elements/ions Cr(VI) has been chosen because chromium is the only heavy metal
newlinewhich is present in its ionic form in almost all types of industrial waste water. Similarly, Fis
newlinealso toxic when present in excess amount and exists in different industrial waste water. It
newlinecan contaminate natural water sources. The deterioration because of the mixed effect of
newlineCr(VI) and F- in aqueous stream causes mass environmental burden, and hence its analysis
newlineis of paramount interest.
newlineBasing on literature and some preliminary studies four different adsorbents like
newlineLagenaria siceraria (bottle gourd) peel, Bauxite (a mineral), Used aqua guard (water filter)
newlinecarbon and Sand have been chosen. The adsorption capacities of naturally available low
newlinecost materials are comparatively less. So, modification (mainly heat and acid treatment) of
newlinethe adsorbent surfaces was accomplished so to improve the adsorption capacities and the
newlinefurther studies were carried out using the modified adsorbents. After modification
newlinehydrochloric acid treated Lagenaria siceraria peel (HLSP), Thermally treated bauxite
newline(TTB) and sand without any modifications were used for both Cr(VI) and F- removal. But
