An analysis of academic stress emotional maturity and decision making among adolescents in relation to their physical activity levels

Abstract

The present study was designed to examine academic stress, emotional maturity and decision making among adolescents in relation to their physical activity. A sample of Nine hundred (N=900) adolescents of Government school of Chandigarh were randomly selected as subjects for the present study. To examine the significant differences among adolescents on these variables in relation to their physical activity levels, the Scale for Assessing Academic Stress developed by Sinha (2014), The Emotional Maturity Scale developed by Sabapathy, T. (2017), the Career Decision Making Scale developed by Singh, K. (2014) and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (2002) were administered to obtain the required data. The One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was applied to find out the significant differences among adolescents in relation to their physical activity levels. Least Significant Difference (LSD) Post-hoc test was applied to find out direction and degree of differences where F value found significant. The level of significance was set at 0.05. The results showed no significant association between physical activity and academic stress among adolescents. Physical Activity significantly contributed towards the betterment of emotional maturity(total) and its sub-variables; self-knowledge (positive), self-confidence (positive), acceptance of reality (positive and negative), self-control (positive), social adjustment (positive), consistency (positive). However, physical activity did not contribute significantly on the sub-variables; self-knowledge (negative), self-confidence (negative), self-control (negative), social adjustment (negative) and consistency (negative) of emotional maturity. and sub variables of emotional maturity.
