The Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) is a versatile, customdesigned, newlinepower quality conditioning equipment that has found acceptance by newlinethe academics and the industries. Typically, the SAPF is composed of a three newlinephase bidirectional AC/DC converter, a filter on the AC side and a DC-link newlinecapacitor on the DC side. The SAPF is connected at the point of common newlinecoupling (PCC) across the three phase AC bus bar in between the three phase newlineAC source and the three phase load. The SAPF is used primarily for newlinemitigating the nonlinear components of the load current on the source side of newlinePCC and make the source current nearly sinusoidal. newlineIn addition, the SAPF can also be used for reactive power newlinecompensation by supplying the reactive power demand of the load and newlinerelieving the source from the burden of supplying the reactive power demand newlineof the load. Further, if the three phase load is unbalanced, the SAPF can newlinemanage the unbalance in the load and let the source side be balanced. newlineThe SAPF is a versatile piece of equipment that can be designed for newlinethe specific loads and it has attracted many researchers who have eventually newlinecontributed to the improvement of the SAPF in different directions. The newlinedifferent directions of research and development include the topological newlinemodifications, the advancements in the control and management of the SAPF, newlinethe Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) schemes and the possible usage of the newlinecontemporary technological developments for the improvement of the SAPF. newline
