| dc.description.abstract | From the ancient time, plants as a whole or their parts have been utilized by humans for their wellbeing including the remedy for different ailments. In modern era, the medicinal property of plants is thoroughly been investigated in relation to their phytochemical constituents and bioactivities. The advancement in research related to this field indicates that many of these phytochemicals are also potent antioxidants which can lower the risk of many degenerative diseases including hepatic diseases that are initiated by elevated oxidative stress. Among these natural products, phenolics are important due to their usage as dietary antioxidant components and thus most widely studied. Plant phenolics comprises of chemically diverse group among which flavonoids are of utmost importance due to their ability to combat oxidative burst. Natural products with high antioxidant potential from different natural sources are the centre of attraction for the researchers to develop antioxidant based the pharmaceuticals, food products etc for human benefit. newlinePaederia foetida L. (Family: Rubiaceae) and Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. (Family: Fabaceae), are two medicinally important plants and the leaves of these plants are used as traditional remedy, to cure liver related problems by many communities in India and other South Asian countries. However, the medicinal potential of these plants is not been fully utilized due to the lack of proper scientific validation of phytoconstituents and their related bioactivities. The aim of this study is to assess antioxidant property and hepatoprotective activity of phenolics (flavonoids) extracted from P.foetida and C.cajan leaves. Furthermore, the interrelationship between phenolics, antioxidant capacity and hepatoprotective activity is highlighted. Identification of phenolic constituents from the studied plant species is attempted. newline | |
