Comparative Study on Compatible and Incompatible Interactions in Wheat Puccinia striiformis f sp tritici

Abstract

newlineStripe rust also known as yellow rust of wheat caused by a fungal pathogen named newlinePuccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici (Pst). This fungal disease incurs substantial losses in the yield newlineof wheat in cooler and hilly areas worldwide. It is localized in Northern hill zone and Northwestern newlineplain zone of India where it is responsible for huge production losses in wheat cultivars. newlineStripe rust can cause upto 70% yield loss and sometime even 100%, depending on newlineenvironmental factors and host resistance. PBW343 was widely cultivated wheat variety and newlineduring 2008-09, yellow rust was reported in sub mountains district of Punjab on the same newlinevariety that caused 60-80% reduction in yield due to replacement of this variety. Puccinia newlinestriiformis is an obligate biotroph and unveils significant variation in the pathogen population. newlineIt is reported that mutation, recombination, migration and selection cause evolution of new Pst newlinepathotypes. More than 140 races of stripe rust pathogen are reported in US and a total of 28 newlinepathoypes have been characterized in India based on interaction between host and pathogen.
