Preclinical and Clinical Evaluation of Siddha Drug Veppampoo Mathirai in Uraththa Pitha Vaatham Systemic Hypertension

Abstract

The present study Pre clinical and Clinical evaluation of Siddha drug Veppampoo Mathirai in Uraththa Pitha Vaatham Systemic Hypertension was conducted among 18-60 years adults of both sexes to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the drug Veppampoo Mathirai in the treatment of Systemic Hypertension through preclinical, Pharmacological and Clinical studies. The quality and the safety of the drug was ensured through preclinical analytical studies. Physicochemical analysis was done as recommended by guidelines Testing protocols for ASU Medicine , PLIM Ghaziabad and the analysed parameters ensured the quality and standard of the drug. The preliminary Phytochemical analysis was done on Veppampoo mathirai (VPM) and showed the presence of triterpenoids, steroids, tannins and phenols. These phytochemicals have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and lipid lowering properties which are supportive for reduction of blood pressure. TLC and HPTLC Chromatographic techniques were done and showed the presence of twelve versatile phytocomponents through their prominent peaks with RF values ranging from 0.02 0.86. The heavy metals analysed through Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) revealed Mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic were detected below the permissible limit as per Ayush guidelines. Pesticide analysis was done on VPM and the following Organochlorine, organophosphorus and pyrethroids pesticides were found below quantification limit. CONCLUSION: The current study concluded that, the study drug Veppampoo mathirai is a potent Antihypertensive tablet that was proved safe and efficacious for treating Uraththa Pitha Vaatham (Systemic Hypertension) of adults aged among 18-60 years. The polyherbal Siddha formulation, Veppampoo mathirai mentioned in Classical Siddha text Noigaluku Siddha Parigaaram is confirmed as an effective drug for Uraththa Pitha Vaatham (Systemic hypertension) through preclinical, animal and clinical studies. It has significant action in reduction of Blood pressure.
