Microbiological profile of staphylococcus species and its correlation with host factors

Abstract

quotAbstract newline1. Introduction newlineThe Staphylococcus species causes a variety of infections and carrying the genes responsible for multi-drug resistance. Staphylococci are the part of the normal human flora and the rate of colonization is higher among patients with diabetes, HIV-infected patients, patients undergoing hemodialysis, and individuals with skin damage. The anterior nares are the most frequent site of human colonization, although the skin, vagina, axilla, perineum, and oropharynx also colonized and these colonization sites serve as a reservoir of strains for future infections. newline The bacterial characteristics and patient outcomes vary due to a variety of resistance mechanisms, virulence factors, and host factors. The choice of antimicrobial agents to treat both coagulase positive and negative staphylococci has become increasingly problematic because of the prevalence of multidrug newlineresistant strains as more than 80% of nosocomial isolates are resistant to methicillin. Hence local data about antimicrobial resistance and infection trend is necessary to treat such infections. newline newline2. Aim and Objectives newlinePresent study was aimed to find out the prevalence of Staphylococcus species among various clinical specimens, antimicrobial resistance pattern and correlate the results with host factors. newline newline3. Materials and Methods newlineAll the clinical specimens i.e.- Pus wound swab, blood, sputum, urine, aspirates and body fluids collected in a sterile container, received in the Department of microbiology for culture and sensitivity were included in the study. newlineIdentification of Staphylococcus species and their antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done as per standard protocol and as per CLSI guidelines. Medical case report/Prescription form was used for the record of age, sex, medical history, clinical presentation, co-morbid condition, associated predisposing factors, and newlineprior antibiotic therapy/ antibiotic given. newline newline4. Observations and Results newlineThis study is an analysis of 421 isolates of Staphylococcus species, of which 359 (85.
