| dc.description.abstract | Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSGs) are widely used in renewable energy systems like wind power due to their high efficiency, reliability, and low maintenance. Unlike conventional generators, PMSGs use permanent magnets in the rotor, eliminating the need for external excitation, reducing energy losses, and simplifying construction. Their compact design and absence of brushes or field windings make them ideal for both high- and low-speed applications, especially in direct-drive wind turbines, where they reduce the need for gearboxes and lower operational costs. This research compares three-phase and five-phase PMSRG models to understand their efficiency benefits. Phase control in PMSGs adjusts phase angles to optimise performance, improving d-axis and q-axis current control and enhancing efficiency at varying speeds. However, PMSGs face challenges, including the high cost and limited availability of magnets and their temperature sensitivity, which can cause demagnetisation. Current research is exploring alternative magnet materials and improved cooling systems to enable operation in harsh environments. Overall, PMSGs are central to modern wind energy systems, offering long-term durability and performance. Advances in materials and control technologies will further improve their efficiency and affordability, reinforcing their role in sustainable energy generation. newline | |
