Optimization of freshwater algae for efficient production of biofuels

Abstract

newline newlineThe present work on the optimization of freshwater algae for efficient production of biofuel was performed in three parts to achieve the proposed objectives. The first part is focused on the bioprospecting of freshwater algal species for biofuel production. In this work, freshwater algal species were collected from different waterbodies of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. These algal species were further identified in the laboratory, and based on morphological identification through the microscope, a total of 51 algal species were identified. Among these species, 18 belong to Cyanophyta, 22 belong to Chlorophyta,7 belong to Bacillariophyta, and 4 belong to Charophyta. Thereafter, we attempted to purify all the collected algal species in our laboratory, but only 18 species were purified and preserved in the algal repository of the Department of Biotechnology, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University. Subsequently, the potential of these purified algal species in producing biomass and lipid was determined following the standard methods. newline
