dc.description.abstractThe investigation on genetic studies and management of bacterial wilt in brinjal newline(Solanum melongena L.) were carried out during 2003-06 in the Olericulture Unit, Department newlineof Horticulture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. The nine genotypes including newlinelocal cultivars were used for the study based on their per se performance and horticultural newlinetraits. newlineTwenty hybrids developed using line × tester design were shown wide range of newlineresistance to bacterial wilt with considerable magnitude of heterosis for yield and quality newlineattributing characters. The two crosses DWD-1 × Malapur and DWD-1 × Rabakavi were found newlineto be best yielders and resistant to wilt incidence over two years and these two crosses can newlinebe commercially cultivated in the farmers field. Combining ability analysis revealed that all the newlinecharacters studied were predominantly governed by non-additive gene action. newlineThe inheritance study for bacterial wilt resistance in four F2 populations has fit into a newline3:1 ratio indicates the single dominant gene governed the resistance. Among the segregating newlinepopulations studied, very high frequency of transgressive segregants for fruit weight (8.91%) newlineand fruit yield per plant (6.44%) were observed in the F2 population of DWD-1 × Malapur. newlineAmong mutagens, gamma rays response was good compared to ethyl methane newlinesulphonate for the improvement of local cultivar Malapur for the bacterial wilt. The bacterial newlinewilt resistant mutants were observed in the 5 and 10 Krd gamma rays treatments in the M2 newlinegeneration and no fruit set was observed in M1 generation of EMS treatments. newlineThe impact of soil amendment on bacterial wilt incidence revealed that the gypsum newlinelevel 250 kg per ha reduced the wilt incidence significantly compared to control and lower newlinelevels. In the crop rotation experiment the wilt incidence has reduced to 59.10 and 58.52 per newlinecent with maize and sorghum, respectively compared to monocropping sequence (82.31%) of newlinebrinjal. newline
