Abstract
The research work carried out as a part of my Ph.D. program involves the enrichment of tailor-made strength properties of metal matrix composite of Al-Mg as matrix material, reinforced by particulates of silicon carbide and graphite. The chemical composition test of the base alloy and the reinforcements were performed to know the elemental compositions of the base alloy and reinforcement used. The SEM, EDS, and XRD tests of the base matrix and the reinforcement was executed to know the peaks of the elements present at 2and#1012; angle and their microstructure and bonding properties for base alloy. Selections of the base matrix and the reinforcement based on the extensive literature survey conducted and the results of SEM and EDS for base alloys and reinforcements.
newlineLiquid stir casting is the most cost-effective method used to produce the casting of Al-Mg MMCs reinforced by SiC and Gr. The specimens were prepared as per the ASTM standard from three different cast diameters. The mechanical properties like density, hardness, tensile, and compression strength of the Al-Mg matrix reinforced with various wt. percentage of SiC measured for the specimens prepared and the results compared with casts of base alloy for three different diameters of castings produced. On similar grounds, Al-Mg reinforced with Graphite alone and their strength properties were analyzed. The strength and tribology properties of Al-Mg MMCs analyzed by characterization of various compositions by varying the wt. percentage of SiC and graphite blend in a matrix and their properties compared with its base alloy.
newlineThe wear test of MMCs specimens was performed using a pin on the disc test rig for all the casting produced and reinforced with SiC, Gr., and SiC and Gr. with a constant rpm and varying the load acting on the pin for a stipulated time.
