Issues related to road transport and their environmental implications in north twenty four parganas district west bengal

Abstract

newlineAmong different manifestations of transport systems, road transport is mostly preferred because of its convenience, flexibility and comparative cost advantage with respect to other transport systems. However, under the bi-directional impact of rapid urbanization and motorization, and consequent oversaturation of road network capacity, road transport system is characterized with a number of environmental problems. These problems include vehicular air pollution in local or regional level, climate change and greenhouse effect, noise emission and its impact mainly on human health, pollution of watercourses and stagnation of drainage due to unsystematic disposal of metallic equipments of vehicles and reprocessing of residuals of fossil fuels, land pollution committed by dumping of municipal solid wastes (MSW) and bio-medical wastes
